Zirconium borohydride piperazine complex, an efficient, air and thermally stable reducing agent

A zirconium borohydride piperazine complex (Ppyz)Zr(BH4) 2Cl2, obtained by the reaction of an ethereal solution of ZrCl4 and LiBH4 with piperazine is a stable, selective and efficient reducing agent. (Ppyz)Zr(BH4)2Cl 2 reduces aldehydes, ketones, silylethers, alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds and esters. The reactions were performed in diethyl ether at room temperature or under reflux, and the yields of the corresponding alcohols were excellent. The selective reduction of aldehydes in the presence of ketones and complete regioselectivity in the reduction of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl groups were observed.

A simple, base-free preparation of S-aryl thioacetates as surrogates for aryl thiols

A mild method for the preparation of S-aryl thioacetates by hetero cross-coupling reactions of aryl bromides or aryl triflates with potassium thioacetate is described. The reaction proceeded smoothly in toluene at 110C, mediated by catalytic Pd2(dba)3 in combination with CyPF-tBu as the ligand. Neither the presence of a base nor microwave conditions were required. The formed S-aryl thioacetate proved to be stable under flash chromatographic conditions and could be rapidly converted into the corresponding thiol under mildly basic conditions.

Synthesis and vibrational circular dichroism of enantiopure chiral oxorhenium(V) complexes containing the hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate Ligand

The infrared and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of six chiral oxorhenium(V) complexes, bearing a hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) ligand, have been investigated. These complexes are promising candidates for observation of parity violation (symmetry breaking due to the weak nuclear force). New chiral oxorhenium complexes have been synthesized, namely, [TpReO(eta 2-O(CH3)CH2CH2O-O,O)] (4a and 4b) diastereomers and [TpReO(eta2-N(CH3)CH 2CH2O-N,O)] (5) and [TpReO(eta2-N(tBu)CH 2CH2O-N,O)] (6) enantiomers. All compounds could be obtained in enantiomerically pure form by using either column chromatography or HPLC over chiral columns. VCD spectroscopy of these compounds and of [TpReO(eta2-N(CH3)CH(CH3)CH(Ph)O-N,O)] (2) and [TpReO(eta2-N(CH2)3CHCO2-N,O)] (3) (with chiral bidentate ligands derived, respectively, from ephedrine and proline) were studied. This allowed the absolute configuration determination of all compounds together with their conformational analysis, by comparing calculated and experimental spectra. This is the first VCD study of rhenium complexes which further demonstrates the applicability of VCD spectroscopy in determining the chirality of inorganic complexes.

Boosting catalyst activity in cis -selective semi-reduction of internal alkynes by tailoring the assembly of all-metal aromatic tri-palladium complexes

Highly symmetric [Pd3]+ clusters that present delocalized metal-metal bonds can catalyse the selective semi-reduction of internal alkynes to cis-alkenes. Studies on factors governing the formation of all-metal aromatics enabled the design of an optimised catalytic system that delivers cis-alkenes with almost complete selectivity on a gram scale with very low catalyst loadings (0.03 mol%).

Effect of raw material, pressing and glycosidase on the volatile compound composition ofwine made from goji berries

This study investigated the effect of raw material, pressing, and glycosidase on the aromatic profile of goji berry wine. The free-run and the pressed juice of dried and fresh goji berries were used for wine production, whereas glycosidase was applied to wine after fermentation. Dried goji berry fermented wine exhibited much stronger fruity, floral, caramel, and herbaceous odors due to higher levels of esters, beta-ionone and methionol. However, fresh berry fermented wine possessed stronger chemical notes due to higher levels of 4-ethylphenol. Pressing treatment reduced the fruity and caramel odors in these fermented wines, and fresh berry free-run juice fermented wine exhibited the least floral aroma. Glycosidase addition did not alter the aromatic composition of wines. The principal component analysis indicated that goji raw material played a primary role in differentiating the aromatic profiles of the wines due to the difference on the content of 20 esters, nine benzenes, eight aldehydes/ketones, three acids, two alcohols and six other volatiles. The content differences on isopentyl alcohol, styrene, benzyl alcohol, 1-octanol, (E)-5-decen-1-ol, 1-hexanol, and -cyclocitral resulted in the segregation of the wines with and without the pressing treatment, especially for fresh berry fermented win.

Modification of chimeric (2S, 3S)-butanediol dehydrogenase based on structural information

A chimeric (2S, 3S)-butanediol dehydrogenase (cLBDH) was engineered to have the strict (S)-configuration specificity of the (2S, 3S)-BDH (BsLBDH) derived from Brevibacterium saccharolyticum as well as the enzymatic stability of the (2R, 3S)-BDH (KpMBDH) from Klebsiella pneumonia by swapping the domains of two native BDHs. However, while cLBDH possesses the stability, it lacks the specificity. In order to assist in the design a BDH having strict substrate specificity, an X-ray structural analysis of a cLBDH crystal was conducted at 1.58 A. The results obtained show some readily apparent differences around the active sites of cLBDH and BsLBDH. Based on this structural information, a novel (2S, 3S)-BDH having a preferred specificity was developed by introducing a V254L mutation into cLBDH. The influence of this mutation on the stability of cLBDH was not evaluated. Nevertheless, the technique described herein is an effective method for the production of a tailor-made BDH.
