Disclosed is a method for producing an alcohol from a lactone or a carboxylic acid ester, which enables to produce an alcohol from a lactone or a carboxylic acid ester under relatively mild conditions with high yield and high catalytic efficiency. This method also enables to produce an optically active alcohol from an optically active lactone or an optically active carboxylic acid ester. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing an alcohol by hydrogen reducing a lactone or a carboxylic acid ester in the presence of a catalyst containing ruthenium and a phosphine compound represented by the following general formula (1): wherein R1 represents a spacer; R2, R3, R4, R5, R6 and R7 independently represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group; and R8, R9, R10, R11, R12 and R13 independently represent an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group.

A new one-step strategy for the stereochemical assignment of acyclic 2- and 3-sulfanyl-1-alkanols using the CD exciton chirality method

A new one-step strategy is described for the stereochemical assignment of acyclic 2- and 3-sulfanyl-1-alkanols using the CD exciton chirality method. Using the 9-anthroate chromophore for the derivatization of both functional groups, the resulting bisignate CD curves unequivocally allow the determination of the stereochemistry from a single CD measurement. The usefulness of the new method is demonstrated using synthesized optically pure 3-sulfanyl-1-hexanols and 2-sulfanyl-1-hexanols as model compounds. The developed microscale method is also useful for the stereochemical assignment of 1,2- and 1,3-diols. To our knowledge this is the first application of the CD exciton chirality method to acyclic 2- and 3-sulfanyl-1-alkanols.

Identification and characterization of a mycobacterial NAD+-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase with superior reduction of diacetyl to (S)-acetoin

An enzyme capable of reducing acetoin in the presence of NADH was purified from Mycobacterium sp. B-009, a non-clinical bacterial strain of soil origin. The enzyme is a homotetramer and can be classified as a medium-chain alcohol dehydrogenase/ reductase based on the molecular weight of the monomer. Identification of the structural gene revealed a limited distribution of homologous genes only among actinomycetes. In addition to its activity as a reductase specific for (S)-acetoin (EC 1.1.1.76), the enzyme showed both diacetyl reductase (EC 1.1.1.304) and NAD+ -dependent alcohol dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.1) activities. (S)-Acetoin and diacetyl reductases belong to a group of short-chain alcohol dehydrogenase/reductases but do not have superior abilities to dehydrogenate monoalcohols. Thus, the purified enzyme can be readily distinguished from other enzymes. We used the dual functionality of the enzyme to effectively reduce diacetyl to (S)-acetoin, coupled with the oxidation of 1-butanol.

This work is a contribution to the molecular understanding of the thermodynamic properties of the chiral compounds. A comprehensive thermochemical study of the liquid enantiopure and racemate pairs of optically active alkyl lactates has been performed. Vapor pressures of DL-(¡À)-, L-(-)-methyl-, and DL-(¡À)-, L-(-)-n-butyl esters of lactic acid were measured by the transpiration method. The liquid phase standard molar enthalpies of formation of these esters were measured by using the high-precision combustion calorimetry. The standard molar enthalpies of vaporization of alkyl lactates at 298.15 K were derived from vapor pressure temperature dependencies. Thermochemical data of these compounds were collected, evaluated, and tested for internal and external consistency. The high-level G4 quantum-chemical method was used for mutual validation of the experimental and theoretical gas phase enthalpies of formation of alkyl lactates. A critical review of the available thermochemical data for the liquid and crystalline enantiopure and racemate pairs of optically active compounds has been performed. Useful general trends in energetics of sublimation, vaporization, and formation of optically active compounds have been revealed. This knowledge is required for evaluation of new and already available experimental data for the chiral compounds, and it can be helpful to assess volatility or feasibility of processes to separate enantiomers.

New discogens based on the octasubstituted phthalocyanines (Pc) were synthesized: 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis-phthalocyanine (1a), 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis<4-(dodecylthio)-2-oxa-butyl>-phthalocyanine (1b), 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis-phthalocyanine (1c), phthalocyanine 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octa-n-dodecanoate (1d), S-(+)-2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis<4-(dodecyloxy)-2-oxa-pentyl>-phthalocyanine (1e), as well as their corresponding copper complexes (CuPc) 2a, 2b, 2c and 2e.They were characterized by microanalysis, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, and their mesomorphic behaviors were examined with DSC and optical microscopic methods.The products exhibited the following optical textures and transition temperature ranges: focal conic (1a, 95-267 grad; 2a, 108-304 grad), linear default (1b, 52-247 grad; 2b, 70-255 grad; 1c, 75-269 grad; 2c, 78-310 grad), fan-shaped (1d, 58-303 grad; 2e, 29-191 grad).Chiral discogenic PcH2 1e, however, showed a cholesteric-like texture (23-151 deg C) in which the transition of a platelet (blue phase) to a fan-shaped texture was observed.
