Glass-forming ability of butanediol isomers

In this study, the thermal behavior of butanediol isomers is investigated for temperatures ranging from 103 to 303 K using differential scanning calorimetry, complemented, when necessary, by polarized light thermal microscopy. The butanediol isomers display quite different thermal behaviors: for 1,2- and 1,3-isomers, glass transition is the only thermal event observed; for 1,4-butanediol, crystallization occurs on cooling even at a high scanning rate and no glass formation was detected; and for the 2,3-isomer, glass or crystal formation is dependent on the experimental conditions employed. The glass-forming ability of the isomers is correlated with data available on their molecular symmetry.

Metabolites recovery from fermentation broths via pressure-driven membrane processes

The production of specific metabolites using microorganism has been promoted and enhanced by two different approaches, such as modification of the metabolic pathways of microorganism and optimization of culture medium conditions to synthesize specific compounds. However, research community is today focused on the development of processes and techniques for a suitable recovery of metabolites from different stages of fermentation. For this purpose, the use of organic solvents has been the most common approach for the recovery of specific target compounds according to the solvent affinity. Additionally, these techniques also require the implementation of unit processes to obtain better recovery rates; it means that solvent extraction methods need the implementation of additional steps to recover the solvents used, which may involve the increase of final costs in the production process. For this reason, researchers have started to consider membrane-based technologies (e.g. microfiltration [MF], ultrafiltration [UF], and nanofiltration [NF]), as an alternative for the recovery of metabolites from fermentation broths. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current findings of the recovery of metabolites from fermentation broths by means of pressure-driven membrane processes. Particular attention will be paid to relevant data, analyzing and discussing according to the membrane features, metabolite properties, and some other phenomena that influence in the separation. Moreover, a framework of the application of the MF, UF, and NF processes in solutes recovery is addressed. Finally, some fundamentals of these processes are also given.

Substrate structure and incubation-parameter-dependent selectivities in chiral discrimination of galactopyranosides by beta-galactosidase hydrolysis

Mono-beta-galactopyranosides of (+/-)-propane-1,2-diol, (+/-)-butane-1,3-diol, (+/-)-pentane-1,4-diol, (+/-)-butan-2-ol, (+/-)-pentan-2-ol and (+/-)-1,2-O-isopropylideneglycerol were synthesized by the Koenigs-Knorr reaction using hydroxycarbonyl compounds as precursors for the diolic substrates.Hydrolysis of 3-hydroxybutyl beta-D-galactopyranoside 18 by beta-galactosidases from Eschrichia coli, Aspergillus oryzae, Kluyveromyces lactis and Bacillus circulans, respectively, resulted in each case in an enantiomeric enrichment of the released diol. This was most significant with the E. coli enzyme and and increased with higher reaction temperature and shorter incubation periods.Under standartized conditions, cleavage of all synthesized galactopyranosides by this enzyme showed the highest stereoselectivity for butane-1,3-diol, butan-2-ol and isopropylideneglycerol with enantiomeric excesses in the range 60-75percent.For compounds with structural similarity to the natural substrate lactose, enhanced stereodiscriminations were expected. However, this could not be confirmed and instead a specific hydrophobic interaction is suggested to play a crucial role.

The result showed that such a combination of chemo- and biocatalysis improved the catalytic yield more than two times compared with that of sole metal catalysis.Electric Literature of 24621-61-2. I hope my blog about 24621-61-2 is helpful to your research.

Kinetic Resolution of 1,2-Diols via NHC-Catalyzed Site-Selective Esterification

A kinetic resolution of 1,2-diols bearing both a secondary and a primary alcohol motif through an N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed oxidative acylation reaction has been developed. A site- and enantioselective esterification reaction is involved for this process. Asymmetric hydrogenation of prochiral carboxylic acids and functionalized carbonyl compounds catalysed by ruthenium(II)-binap complexes with aryl nitriles (binap=(R)- or (S)-2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1′-binaphthyl)
