A new dinuclear chiral Co(salen) complexes bearing group 13 metals have been synthesized and characterized. The easily prepared complexes exhibited very high catalytic reactivity and enantioselectivity for the asymmetric ring opening of epoxides with H2O, chloride ions and carboxylic acids and consequently provide enantiomerically enriched terminal epoxides (>99% ee). It also catalyzes the asymmetric cyclization of ring opened product, to prepare optically pure terminal epoxides in one step. The homogeneous dinuclear chiral Co(salen) have been covalently immobilized on MCM-41. The potential benefits of heterogenization include facilitation of catalyst separation and recyclability requiring very simple techniques. The system described is very efficient.

A series of glycosylated diol and triol derivatives was synthesized in order to serve as model compounds for the analysis of the stereochemistry, regiochemistry, and defect structures of poly(vinyl glycoside)s. 13C NMR spectroscopic analysis of these compounds revealed that the attached chiral carbohydrate substituents induced a strong correlation of the chemical shifts of both the anomeric C and the alpha-C atom of the aglycon with the absolute configuration of the latter. The influence of the stereoconfiguration of beta- and gamma-C atoms as well as the regiochemistry of the aglycon on the chemical shifts of the alpha-C and the anomeric C atom was also investigated. A Comparative Study of Dibenzylideneacetone Palladium Complexes in Catalysis

Commercial Pdx(dba)y from various suppliers was found to vary considerably in appearance, homogeneity, purity, and catalytic activity. The Buchwald-Hartwig amination of 4-bromoanisole (5) with aniline (6) was established as a sensitive test reaction to probe the efficiency of Pdx(dba)y batches in catalytic transformations. The yields obtained with 17 different Pdx(dba)y batches ranged from 10% to nearly quantitative and could not be predicted reliably on the basis of any physical or spectroscopic descriptor alone. The best results in the catalytic test reaction were consistently achieved with a self-made slowly crystallized Pd2(dba)3¡¤toluene adduct. A protocol is disclosed that allows batches of Pdx(dba)y with unsatisfactory or inconsistent performance to be converted into this reliable precatalyst.

DFT calculations suggest that the mechanism of formation for the silaoxiranyl complex Cp?(IXy)(H)2Ru-Si(OCPh2)Trip (6) involves coordination of benzophenone to a silylene silicon atom, followed by a single-electron transfer in which Si-bonded, non-innocent benzophenone accepts an electron from the reactive, electron-rich ruthenium center. Importantly, this electron transfer promotes an unusual 1,2-hydrogen migration to the resulting, more electron-deficient ruthenium center via a diradicaloid transition state.

Fusaricates H-K and fusolanones A-B from a mangrove endophytic fungus Fusarium solani HDN15-410

Seven compounds including four undescribed fusaric acid derivatives, namely fusaricates H-K, and two undescribed gamma-pyrone derivatives, named fusolanones A-B, as well as a known compound fusaric acid, were isolated from a mangrove endophytic fungus Fusarium solani. Fusaricates H-K represent the first cases of fusaric acid butanediol esters and are diastereoisomers. Their structures including absolute configurations were elucidated based on NMR, MS, chemical synthesis, chiral HPLC analysis and ECD calculations. The antibacterial activity of all undescribed compounds were tested and fusolanone B showed the best activity with MIC value 6.25 mug/mL on Vibrio parahaemolyticus.
