Factors determining the chemoselectivity of phosphorus-modified palladium catalysts in the hydrogenation of chloronitrobenzenes

The precursor nature effect on the state of the Pd?P surface layer in palladium catalysts and on their properties in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of chloronitrobenzenes under mild conditions has been investigated. A general feature of the Pd?P-containing nanoparticles obtained from different precursors and white phosphorus at P/Pd = 0.3 (PdCl2 precursor) and 0.7 (Pd(acac)2 precursor) is that their surface contains palladium in phosphide form (BE(Pd3d5/2) = 336.2 eV and BE(?2?) = 128.9 eV) and Pd(0) clusters (BE(Pd3d5/2) = 335.7 eV). Factors having an effect on the chemoselectivity of the palladium catalysts in chloronitrobenzenes hydrogenation are considered, including the formation of small palladium clusters responsible for hydrogenation under mild conditions.

Synthesis and 13C NMR spectroscopy of model compounds for the microstructure analysis of poly(vinyl glycoside)s

A series of glycosylated diol and triol derivatives was synthesized in order to serve as model compounds for the analysis of the stereochemistry, regiochemistry, and defect structures of poly(vinyl glycoside)s. 13C NMR spectroscopic analysis of these compounds revealed that the attached chiral carbohydrate substituents induced a strong correlation of the chemical shifts of both the anomeric C and the alpha-C atom of the aglycon with the absolute configuration of the latter. The influence of the stereoconfiguration of beta- and gamma-C atoms as well as the regiochemistry of the aglycon on the chemical shifts of the alpha-C and the anomeric C atom was also investigated. Syntheses of chiral hybrid O,N-donor ligands for the investigation of lanthanide complex reactivities in direct aldol condensations

A method for the synthesis of new chiral alpha/beta-dimethylamino esters and beta-amino ethers from (S,S)-hydrobenzoin is described. These new O,N-donor ligands are expected to prove a useful platform for exploring the relationship between the ligand structure and stereoselective direct aldol condensation catalyzed by their lanthanide complexes. The initial survey of the catalytic utility of newly synthesized complexes in the unique aldol-Tishchenko reaction of aldehydes and aliphatic ketones is also presented.

The VCD spectrum of 2-methylthietane: measured (800-1500 cm-1) and computed with semi-empirical models

The vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectrum (800 to 1500 cm-1) is reported for 2-methylthietane (2MT).Fixed partial charge (FPC), atomic polar tensor (APT), and charge flow (CF) methods are used to compute the VCD spectra for both stable conformers (CH3 in the axial or equatorial orientation) for the complete range of fundamental vibrations, based on 3-21G and 6-31G* harmonic force fields.The experimental and computed absorption and VCD spectra of R-(+)-2MT are compared to the previously reported spectra of R-(-)-2-methyloxetane.The success of the APT and CFmodels for reproducing the dominant ring stretching IR and VCD features of that compound is rationalized by a comparison of APT and FPC intensity expressions.Further comparison of the APT and FPC calculated electric dipole moment derivatives are interpreted to suggest values for the diagonal CS and CH stretching charge flow terms for 2MT.These investigations then provide a rationale for previously reported successes of the FPC model, and permit identification of specific vibrational modes of 2MT that are amenable to FPC-VCD modeling.The previously established conformational mixture of ca. 30percent axial and 70percent equatorial is shown to be in accord with FPC-VCD predictions for the most appropriate (beta-CH2 wagging) mode. Mono-etherification of racemic propane-1,2-diol by a tin(II) bromide catalyzed reaction with diazofluorene and a study of the Pseudomonas cepacia lipase catalyzed acetylation of the mono-ethers

The tin(II) bromide catalyzed reaction of diazofluorene with racemic propane-1,2-diol in 1,2-dimethoxymethane gave the 1- and 2-monoethers in similar amounts. After tritylation of the 2-ether, 2-(9H-fluoren-9-yloxy)-1- triphenylmethyloxypropane and 1-(9H-fluoren-9-yloxy)propan-2-ol were obtained in pure form. The enantiomeric 1-fluorenyl ethers were resolved by kinetic resolution by transacetylation with the help of Pseudomonas cepacia lipase and both enantiomers of the propane-1,2-diol were obtained after deprotection. The racemic 2-(9H-fluoren-9-yloxy)propan-1-ol was obtained after de-triphenylmethylation. However, transacetylation onto this alcohol under identical conditions to those used for the 1-fluorenyl ether showed no enantioselectivity.
